What is the Sensory Room?
Answer
The Sensory Room in La Retama Central Library is a free public sensory room designed for children with special needs and is the first of its kind in the South Texas region that is available to the public at no cost.
Children up to age 14, together with their parents or caregivers, have access to state-of-the-art therapeutic stations and sensory tools, including an interactive calming station and SensaSoft tumble play rollers.
The Sensory Room was made possible by $75,000 awarded to Corpus Christi Public Libraries from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a competitive Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) grant program. $11,000 in private funding was also donated to the Friends of Corpus Christi Public Libraries for supplemental resources geared toward sensory-friendly programs and events.
In addition to the Sensory Room, La Retama Library holds a sensory-friendly collection with books for parents about sensory disorders, books printed in braille or with tactile material, and more. La Retama Central Library also provides programs focused on sensory needs, including informational programs for adults.
